Mute the Stream That Autoplays on the Twitch Front Page
Open twitch.tv and a featured stream starts playing on its own, sound and all. Previews mutes it the moment it starts. The stream keeps playing, just silently, and one click on the volume brings the sound back.
Why does the Twitch front page play sound on its own?
The Twitch front page opens with a carousel of featured streams, and the one in the middle starts playing by itself. Twitch has no setting to turn that off, so opening Twitch in a new tab can mean a stranger's stream suddenly talking over whatever you were listening to.
How do you mute Twitch autoplay?
Turn on Mute Auto-Playing Videos In Various Pages in Previews. When the featured stream starts, Previews mutes it straight away. It also sets Twitch's own saved preference for that carousel to muted, so the next time you open the front page the stream starts silent instead of being caught after it begins.
The page itself stays the same. The stream still plays, and the volume button in the player works as usual if something catches your eye and you want to hear it.
Does it stop the video from playing?
No. It mutes the player, it does not pause it. You still get a live look at what is on without the noise. If you would rather it did not play at all, the player's pause button still works the same as always.
Which pages does it work on?
Two places where Twitch starts a video without you asking: the featured stream on the front page, and the video that autoplays at the top of an offline channel's home page.
| Option | What happens |
|---|---|
| A Twitch setting | There is none for the front page |
| Mute the whole browser tab | Silences everything in the tab, including the stream you open next, until you unmute the tab |
| Mute the player by hand | Works, after the sound has already started |
| Previews: Mute Auto-Playing Videos | The featured stream starts muted and keeps playing |
