Even Out Stream Volume and Tame Loud Alerts

Twitch YouTube Kick

One streamer whispers, the next one's donation alert blows out your headphones. Audio Defender sits in the player controls and evens the volume out as you watch: quiet voices come up, sudden spikes get caught before they reach you.

The live meter shows what reaches your ears. Shape it, save it, keep it per channel.

Why is Twitch audio so uneven?

Every stream is mixed by a different person with different gear, and Twitch does not level them. So one channel is quiet, the next is loud, and inside a single stream an alert, a TTS message or a jump scare can be far louder than the voice you turned the volume up for. Audio Defender processes the sound in your browser before it plays, so the level stays steady whatever the stream does.

It works like the compressor and limiter a broadcaster would use, applied on your side instead. The volume slider keeps working exactly as before - Audio Defender changes the shape of the sound, not where your volume is set.

How do you stop loud alerts and TTS on Twitch?

Turn on Audio Defender and pick the AudioBang preset. It stays out of the way during normal audio and clamps a sudden spike the instant it happens, so a screaming alert or a blaring text-to-speech message arrives at a sane level. Leveler, the default, goes further and evens out the whole stream, so you rarely touch the volume at all.

Hover the shield button in the player controls to open its panel. The presets cover the usual situations:

Can you see what it is doing?

Yes. The panel has a live output meter that shows the level reaching your ears, with an approximate loudness reading in LUFS. When a spike is being held down, the meter says how many decibels it is limiting, so you can watch it catch an alert as it happens.

Below it are a volume Boost (up to 600% for very quiet streams), a Strength control for how hard the preset works, and advanced sliders - threshold, ratio, attack, release and limiter threshold - if you want to tune it yourself.

Is there an equalizer for Twitch?

Audio Defender includes a 9-band equalizer, from 63 Hz to 16 kHz, with up to 12 dB of boost or cut per band. Cut the boomy bass on a loud stream, bring speech forward on a muffled one, or take the harsh top off a bad microphone. The Voice, Music, Cinema and Night presets come with their own tuned curves as a starting point.

The equalizer and the compressor are separate stages with their own switches, so you can use either one, both, or neither. When you have a sound you like, type a name and Save it as your own preset; it then sits next to the built-in ones on every channel.

Can each channel have its own audio settings?

Yes. Set Applies to to This channel and that channel gets its own preset, boost and strength. Other channels keep using the shared setup, and when you come back to that channel its own setup returns automatically. To keep an equalizer curve with a channel, save it as a preset and pick that preset there. Useful for the one streamer whose mic is always too hot or the music channel you want left alone.

What about streams where the sound is only in one ear?

Turn on Mono in the same panel. It folds every audio channel into both ears, which fixes streams where the microphone or the game only plays on one side. Turning it off returns the original layout untouched.

Where it works

On Twitch, YouTube and Kick, in the main player and in embedded players, including every box of a Multi-Stream layout. Each platform has its own switch in the settings panel, with a separate one for embeds.

Audio Defender takes over the player's audio to process it. If another volume or audio extension does the same on the same tab, whichever attached first keeps it until the page is refreshed, and the panel tells you when that happens.

Frequently asked questions

Does Twitch have a volume normalizer?

No. Twitch plays each stream at whatever level the streamer sends, and there is no setting to even it out. Audio Defender adds one in your browser.

Will it make the stream sound worse?

Not at the default. Leveler is set to even out loudness without squashing the sound, and Music and Cinema use a lighter touch for content where dynamics matter. You can also lower Strength, or switch the compressor off and use only the equalizer, then save that as your own preset.

Does it change my volume slider?

No. The player's volume slider works as usual. Audio Defender evens out the sound itself, and you still set the overall volume the same way you always have.

Does it work on YouTube and Kick?

Yes. It works the same way on Twitch, YouTube and Kick, including embedded players and Multi-Stream boxes.

Does it work on Firefox?

Yes. Previews is available on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Chromium browsers such as Brave and Opera.
