See Your Live Twitch Thumbnail the Way Viewers Do
While you are live, your thumbnail is what people see before they decide to click. Previews shows it to you: hover the Twitch logo at the top left and your stream's current thumbnail slides in, the same image viewers get.
How do you see your own Twitch stream thumbnail?
Twitch has no quick way to check it: you have to find your own stream in a directory or in search, often in a second window. With Previews, turn on See Your Own Live Stream Thumbnail, then hover the Twitch logo at the top left of any Twitch page. Your thumbnail appears right there, and it disappears when you move the mouse away.
It is the same image Twitch shows viewers in directories, search results and the Following page. Previews loads it fresh from Twitch on every hover, so you are not looking at an old copy saved by your browser.
Why check your thumbnail while you are live?
Because it is your first impression. Viewers browsing a category see a grid of thumbnails, and yours decides whether they click. A quick look catches the things you cannot see from your own stream setup:
- A Be Right Back or Starting Soon scene you forgot to switch away from.
- Something private on screen, like a notification or the wrong window.
- An overlay or your webcam covering the part of the game that makes people click.
- A frozen or black scene after a capture source stopped working.
How often does Twitch update the thumbnail?
Every few minutes. A Twitch thumbnail is a snapshot, not a live view, so after you switch scenes it can take a few minutes before the new one shows up for viewers. Hover the logo again a little later to confirm it changed.
Where it works
On twitch.tv pages, for example while you watch other streams or keep an eye on your own channel. It does not run in the Creator Dashboard or on clips.twitch.tv. You need to be live: when you are offline Twitch shows its grey placeholder instead, because there is no thumbnail to show.
| Option | What it takes |
|---|---|
| Find it on Twitch | Open your category or search, find your stream among the others |
| Ask chat or a friend | Someone else has to look and tell you |
| Previews: See Your Own Live Stream Thumbnail | Hover the Twitch logo on any Twitch page |
How to turn it on
- Install Previews from the Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons, or Edge Add-ons.
- Open the Previews settings on a Twitch page and go to the Twitch tab.
- In Previews, turn on Streaming - See Your Own Live Stream Thumbnail. If you are signed in to Twitch, your channel name fills in by itself; otherwise type it in the Stream name box.
- Refresh the page, go live, and hover the Twitch logo at the top left.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see my Twitch thumbnail before going live?
No. Twitch only makes a live thumbnail while you are streaming, so there is nothing to show until you go live.
Why does my thumbnail still show an old scene?
Twitch refreshes live thumbnails every few minutes, so a scene change takes a little while to show up. Hover the logo again a few minutes later.
Can I check another streamer's thumbnail the same way?
This setting shows the channel in its Stream name box. To see other channels, Sidebar Previews shows a live preview when you hover any channel in the sidebar.
Does it work on Firefox?
Yes. Previews is available on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Chromium browsers such as Brave and Opera.
