Rewind a Live Stream Without Waiting for the VOD

Twitch Kick

Missed the play everyone is reacting to? Previews lets you step back through the live buffer with SHIFT and the arrow keys, or with rewind and forward buttons in the player controls. Set how many seconds each jump moves. Works on Twitch and Kick.

How do you rewind a Twitch stream?

Twitch has no rewind control on live streams. Previews adds one: turn on Seek Streams Using Keyboard Arrow Keys and SHIFT plus the left or right arrow steps backward or forward through the stream's live buffer. You can also show rewind and forward buttons in the player controls.

The seek amount is configurable, with a separate value for embedded players, so you can set 5 second steps for precision or 30 second steps for skipping. If you prefer clicking to keyboard shortcuts, the on-screen buttons can be placed on either side of the controls.

How far back can you rewind?

As far as the live buffer holds, which on Twitch ranges from nothing to roughly two minutes. Recent moments are reliably seekable; older ones are dropped by the platform as it clears the buffer. Nothing can rewind further back than that until the VOD is published.

This is worth being straight about, because a lot of advice online is not. If you try to seek further back than the buffer holds, the seek gets interrupted - that is the platform clearing older frames, not the extension failing. No extension can recover video the platform has already discarded.

For anything older than the buffer you need the VOD, if the channel publishes one, or a clip. That is a real limit rather than a Previews limitation - but in practice the buffer covers the case people actually hit, which is missing something in the last thirty seconds because chat distracted them.

Rewinding is one direction, catching up is the other.
Once you have watched the moment back, Fast-Forward jumps you straight to the live edge in one click rather than making you seek forward step by step.

Does it work on YouTube and Kick?

It works on Twitch and Kick. YouTube is not included because its live streams already have native keyboard seeking, so there is nothing to add - Previews does not duplicate controls a platform already provides.

Frequently asked questions

Can you rewind a live Twitch stream?

Not with Twitch's own player. With Previews you can step back through the live buffer using SHIFT and the arrow keys or on-screen buttons, as far back as the buffer still holds - typically up to about two minutes.

Why does the stream jump forward when I rewind too far?

Because you have reached the end of what the platform still has buffered. Twitch clears older frames continuously, so a seek past that point gets interrupted and playback returns to what is available.

Can I change how many seconds each seek jumps?

Yes. The seek amount is configurable, and embedded players have their own separate value so you can use different step sizes in each.

Do I have to use the keyboard?

No. Enable Show seek buttons in the player controls to get clickable rewind and forward buttons, and choose which side of the controls they appear on.

Does this work on VODs as well as live streams?

Yes. On VODs the whole video is seekable rather than just a buffer, so the same shortcuts and buttons work without the buffer limit.
