Why does Twitch drop my quality when I switch tabs?
Twitch deliberately lowers video quality when a tab moves to the background, to save bandwidth. It is not a network fault and not a browser bug. The player steps down to a lower rendition - typically 360p or 480p - and the audio degrades with it, then takes a few seconds to climb back when you return to the tab.
This trips people up because every symptom points at the wrong culprit. The stream looks fine while you are watching it, so you only notice when you come back to a blurry picture. If you are listening while working in another tab, you never see the picture at all - you just hear the audio get worse and assume your connection dropped.
It is a long-standing complaint rather than a rare edge case. There are open requests for a setting to disable it, threads on the Brave and Opera forums from people who assumed their browser was at fault, and userscripts written for no other purpose than switching it off.
How to stop Twitch from lowering the quality
Install Previews and turn on Prevent Video Quality Change When In Background in the Player section of the settings panel. It stops the player from stepping down when the tab loses focus, so the stream holds the quality you selected. It is off by default and takes one click.
- Install Previews from the Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons, or Edge Add-ons.
- Click the Previews icon in your browser's toolbar.
- Open the Player section and enable Prevent Video Quality Change When In Background.
- Refresh any open Twitch or Kick tab. That is it.
Blocking the downgrade keeps Twitch from lowering the quality mid-stream. Auto Set Player Quality handles the other half - it sets your preferred quality the moment a stream loads, so you are not starting from whatever Twitch picked either. Most people want both on.
It also prevents most Twitch error #2000 crashes
Twitch errors #1000 and #2000 are usually triggered by the same background quality switch that causes the blur. When the player fails partway through stepping down, it throws a network error instead of recovering. Block the quality change and most of those errors never happen.
This is why the two features are worth turning on together. Preventing the quality change removes the cause; Auto-Refresh on Player Errors catches whatever still slips through and reloads the player automatically. One stops the errors, the other cleans up after the rest.
Which platforms and browsers does it work on?
The background quality block works on Twitch and Kick, in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Opera, and other Chromium browsers. YouTube does not downgrade background tabs the same way, so the toggle is not offered there - use Auto Set Player Quality on YouTube instead.
